‘-아/어/여지다’ is used to express “to become + adjective.” It can also be combined with verbs to make them passive, indicating a result, phenomenon, or changes. To understand this, it is best to look at some examples.

Example sentences

[With verbs]

  1. 저는 고양이가 그려진 옷이 좋아요. I like t-shirts with a cat printed on.

그리다(v)  그리+어지다 = 그려지다 = to be drawn/painted

  1. 컴퓨터가 갑자기 꺼졌어요. The computer was suddenly turned off.

끄다(v) to turn off +어지다 = 꺼지다 to be turned off

  1. 건전지를 갈아 끼웠더니 불이 켜졌어요. I changed the battery, and the light was turned on.

키다(v) to turn on +어지다 = 켜지다 to be turned on

  1. 연필보다 펜이 글씨가 더 잘 써지네요. Letters are written better with a pen than a pencil.

쓰다(v) to write +어지다 = 써지다 to be written

  1. 아침에 늦잠 자는 버릇이 잘 고쳐지지 않아요.

(literal) My habit of waking up late in the morning is not fixed/changed well.

고치다(v) to fix or correct 고치+어지다 = 고쳐지다 to be fixed

  1. 강아지가 너무 말라서 뼈가 만져지네요.

(literal) The puppy is so skinny that its bones are touched (by my hand).

만지다(v) to touch 만지+어지다 = 만져지다 to be touched.

[with adjectives]

  1. 몇 년 사이에 정원이 정말 예뻐졌네요.

The garden has become really pretty over the few years.

예쁘다(adj.) pretty 예쁘+어지다 = 예뻐지다 to become pretty

  1. 머리가 빨리 길어졌으면 좋겠어요. (literal) I hope my hair becomes long fast.

길다(adj.) long +어지다 = 길어지다 to become long

  1. 새 게임을 설치하고 나서 컴퓨터가 더 느려졌어요.

After installing a new game on my computer, it has become slower

느리다(adj.) fast 느리+어지다 = 느려지다 to become slow

  1. 내 방이 전보다 넓어져서 신나요.

I am excited because my room has become bigger/wider than before.

넓다(adj.) wide +어지다 = 넓어지다 to become wider

  1. 키가 작아진 건지 옷이 커진 건지 모르겠어요.

I am not sure if I’ve got smaller or the cloth has become bigger.

작다(adj.) small +아지다 = 작아지다 to become small

크다(adj.) big +어지다 = 커지다 to become big

  1. 여러 사람이 같이 작업해서 디자인이 이상해졌어요.

Many people worked on it together, and the design became strange.

이상하다(adj.) strange 이상하+여지다 = 이상해지다 to become strange.
